That being said, it was still manageable to get through and didn’t cause me to want to stop reading it. At times, the book just went too slow for me and I found myself just not getting enough out of the book. My main problem with this book was that I found some parts lacked pace and performance.

I don’t judge his decisions but I am definitely game for a spin-off all about him.

I felt like as soon as we reached Hinterland and the events unfolded we lost him and his character’s story line. She was not a character I particularly liked at all times, yet I didn’t care. I felt my feelings towards out main character, Alice, were consistent of a love-hate conflict. There was a lot of unknowing going through this book, and the element of suspense that left was truly something I loved about this book. I loved the aspect of the fairy tales belonging to an alternative world and the darkness they portrayed. I thought the plot to this story was so original and well done. I enjoyed this book as a whole, however, after looking back at it in preparation for this review, I realised there were actually some parts I didn’t enjoy so much.įirst of all, to start off on a good note, I want to talk about the plot line. To rescue her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began… Alice’s only clue is the message left behind: Her own mother is stolen away – by a figure who claims to come from the supernatural world where the fairy tales are set. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her isolate estate – the Hazel Wood – Alice discovers how bad her luck can really get.
